A letter to Congressman Jim Cooper on the Kurdish-American Caucus

Kurdish National Congress of North America
P.O. Box 90823, Nashville, TN 37209, USA

The Honorable Jim Cooper, U. S. Congressman

605 Church Street
Nashville, TN 37203
July 23, 2008

Dear Congressman Cooper:

You are no doubt aware of the establishment of the Kurdish-America Caucus (KAC) in the U. S. House of Representatives in late May. The KAC enjoys bipartisan support. It was created by efforts of two prominent congressmen, Lincoln Davis (D-TN-04) and Joe Wilson (R-SC-02). The purpose of the KAC caucus is to promote a better understanding of the Kurdish people in general and the U. S. Kurds in particular, and to enhance the U. S. interests in the Kurdistan region.

The Caucus’ vision is premised on the fact that the U. S. policy toward the Kurds is important to American relations vis-à-vis the countries in the Middle East. The Caucus also believes that the success of the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) is vital to American national interests in the region.

As a loyal entity to the U. S. presence in the region, the KRG, both in its policy and in its diplomatic relations, has consistently regarded the U. S. forces as liberators rather than occupiers. The Kurdistan region is the only region in Iraq and one of the few corners in the entire Middle East that has unequivocally protected American lives and interests.

To maintain and strengthen such a healthy relationship between the U. S. and KRG, we urge you to join the KAC Caucus to move Kurdish-American ties to a stronger level. We are particularly eager for your support since you represent the largest group of Kurdish-American residents in the U.S. and we believe that, therefore, you are one of the Representatives who is best equipped to understand and represent the concerns of your Kurdish-American constituency.  We sincerely hope to see you in the KAC Caucus.

Sincerely yours,
Kirmanj Gundi
Kirmanj Gundi
President
